Win Sock Fix Utility

The WinSockXPFix is used when there is a “not a socket” error in Windows XP when you attempt to renew your IP. These steps will help resolve this issue.

  1. Save your registry!
    • Go to Start > My Documents
    • Right-click on the screen
    • Select New > Folder
    • Right-click the new folder, and click rename
    • Name the folder “Backup Registry”
    • Double click the “Backup Registry” folder
    • Highlight and the file location and press “ctrl + c” to copy it
  2. Download the WinsockXPFIX program
  3. Open the file called winsockxpfix.exe that is now located on your Desktop
  4. When you first open the program, there are three buttons:

  5. Click the ReG-Backup button
  6. Click OK
  7. Under Backup to, paste the file location of your folder by pressing ctrl + v
  8. Click OK
  9. If you get a File Already Exists message, select Yes
  10. This will now save your registry files. When it is complete, you will get a message that says:

  12. In the WinSock Fix window, click the Fix button
  13. Click Yes. This will apply the fix to your computer. When it is complete, you will be asked to restart your computer. After it restarts, open your web browser to access the Internet.
